Scaldiaharbour in Vlissingen-Oost

In the Scaldiahaven in Vlissingen-East, a new terminal is currently under development. This Scaldia Container Terminal will have a deep-sea quay stretching 900 metres and a 250-metre long transverse quay. The deep-sea quay is designed for ships with a maximum draught of 14 metres (LLWS). The terminal is expected to be operational by the end of 2009 and it will provide work, at and around the terminal, for around 200 people.
At the same time, to link up with the transverse quay, to the south of the harbour, the existing quay for Verbrugge Terminals will be extended by 510 metres so that the whole Scaldiahaven will be made fit for ships to berth, in one go.
Construction of the quay walls, with a length of over 1,700 m, will be carried out by Haverkort Voormolen, by order of Exploitatiemaatschappij Schelde Maas, a joint venture between Zeeland Seaports and the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

After a few months’ preparation, construction actually started in May 2008. At the moment, the tubular steel piles are being driven in the first section of the foundation pit on the northern side.
The following phase will consist of the construction of the quay floor. Finally, the harbour can actually be dredged.

Scaldia Container Terminal
The Scaldia Container Terminal will be operated by the Belgian joint venture Sea-invest / Zuidnatie. The new terminal will focus primarily on the handling of containers. There will also be auxiliary services available, such as stripping and stuffing containers, consolidating cargo, sorting, restoring containers and accompanying activities. The new terminal will be designed in such a way that the goods can be shipped in and out in an environmentally friendly way whenever possible (short sea shipping, inland shipping, rail).

The proposed development of the Westerschelde Container Terminal was an important reason for the Belgian joint venture to set up business in the Zeeland port area. Other factors when selecting Zeeland Seaports were the presence of all modes of transport (water, rail and road) and the opportunity to occupy a favourable position in relation to inland shipping.

Employment
The mission of Zeeland Seaports is to boost commercial activity and employment in Zeeland. The impact of the new business venture on employment is considerable. Directly, we are talking about 80 to 100 jobs. Besides this, there is dock work, administrative duties and related logistics activities. Depending on the level of product handling, the investment will not only generate direct, but also indirect, employment. Comparisons with similar terminals lead to a realistic estimate of a further 100 indirect jobs being created.

Sea-invest and Zuidnatie
Sea-invest, with its head office in Ghent, is active internationally in the field of maritime cargo handling and related logistics services. It operates, together with its subsidiaries, as partner in the total supply chain from storage and transshipment to transport, storage and distribution of (neo-)bulk products, air-conditioned cargo, ro-ro and containers. Sea-invest is currently active in the three main Belgian seaports, France, Germany and South Africa.

Zuidnatie is active in the port of Antwerp as maritime cargo handler and as logistics service provider. Via its subsidiaries, it takes care of all logistics operations for various commodities, bulk goods, general cargo, ro-ro and containers.

Extension of quay Verbrugge Terminals
Contractor Van Oord BV started construction of the 1st phase of the Scaldiahaven in 1996. Initial work consisted of raising the site with sand. Then, in 1997, the 1st phase of the Scaldiahaven was delivered. Thanks to the construction of a 690-metre long quay, stevedoring company Verbrugge was able to start using the site behind (25 ha) in 1999. Soon afterwards, construction of 5 large storage sheds + office space was completed.

Due to a steady increase in the cargo package, it became necessary to expand the Verbrugge Terminal on the Scaldiahaven. The existing 690-metre quay did not provide enough berths and needed extending. This 510-metre extension is now being created as part of one scheme with the work on the northern side and tip of the Scaldiahaven. In this way, Verbrugge will shortly have 1200 metres of quay at its disposal.

In anticipation of the quay extension, Verbrugge has already built a 6th shed. Plans for even more have already been made. In the Scaldiahaven, Verbrugge will mainly handle wood pulp (= cellulose), a basic raw material for paper. The wood pulp is sourced in South America.
